Lysistrata is a comedy. As all old comedy needs to remove or reconcile all obstacles to pave the way to a happy ending, it was good to pull together all the loose ends in class Monday. Although there were no new marriages in this comedy, or in our class (that I know of), the play and the week of Spring break has ended with feasting, dancing and lovemaking for many.
The slogan, make love not war, was such a big part of my youth that I couldn't resist this picture even though it is a bit risque for my tastes. (I have had to hide the book cover from my teen and preteen grandsons. I will have to blame Aristophanes if any negative comments are made about the picture I chose. Lewd and obscene are words and conditions I try to avoid, still it has been beneficial for me to be reminded that nothing is sacred. I have laughed much and appreciated all the symbolism and political statements presented in such a dramatic and entertaining way.
